Presupposition Incorporation in Adverbial Quantification
نویسنده
چکیده
In this paper, we present a critique of the uniform treatment of nominal and adverbial quantification in van der Sandt’s binding theory of presuppositions. We develop an alternative account of adverbial quantification framed in terms of Beaver’s reconstruction of Karttunen’s satisfaction theory. This account provides a simpler characterization of adverbial quantification that does not require recourse to accommodation to explain the basic facts regarding presupposition incorporation.

The Role of Situations and Presuppositions in Restricting Adverbial Quantification
This thesis proposes a novel solution to the problem of determining the domain of an adverbial quantifier. Adverbial quantification crucially differs from nominal quantification in that, in general, no indication of the domain of quantification is syntactically given in an adverbially quantified sentence. As a result, two questions about adverbial quantifier domains naturally arise. First, what...
متن کاملComplexity of Presuppositions in Local Domain
In this paper we would like to deal with interaction of presupposition triggers and show that the binding theory of presupposition comes up with it better than the satisfaction theory. In section 2, the newly developed presupposition conception is introduced. Section 3 explains the Binding Theory in contrast with the Satisfaction Theory. In sections 4 and 5, Kamp's new idea about the treatment ...
متن کاملA Proper Architecture for Presupposition and Quantification
In this paper we present a three-dimensional architecture for the interpretation of a fragment of natural language which combines insights from presupposition theory, dynamic interpretation and the theory of generalized quantifiers. The semantics is shown to be a proper extension of a classical one, and to enable a flexible treatment of presupposition resolution along the lines of, in particula...
متن کاملThe Syntactic and Semantic Roots of Floating Quantification
Through the study of floating quantifiers in a variety of languages, I demonstrate that floating quantification is not a uniform phenomenon and outline a series of puzzles that force us to adopt a two-part analysis. I argue that certain floating quantifiers are related to their nominal associate by syntactic transformation (the stranding approach, Sportiche 1988; Miyagawa 1989) and that others ...
متن کاملQuantifier Acquisition: Presuppositions of “every”
Three components of determiner meanings – truth conditions, implicatures, and presuppositions – have been identified. One of the major findings in acquisition, related to the truth conditions of the quantifiers, has been that children go through at least two stages of non-adult interpretation of the quantifier every (Philip, 1995). More recently, researchers (Noveck, 2001; Gualmini et al., 2001...
